“My prediction,” I say, only vaguely aware of my preachy tone—the one Jo, if she were here, would try to coax me out of by gently patting my shoulder—“is that fifty to a hundred years from now, the majority of newborns will be mixed-race, most people will eat a plant-based diet, and non-monogamy—well, it will never be the norm, but it will be regarded and perhaps even respected as a valid alternative for ever-failing monogamous relationships.”

What I am aware of is that my earlier spat with Jo bothers me far more than I let on, and I’ve been greedily drinking away my growing frustration. Jessica has been a willing drinking partner.

“Australians will never go off beef. Or lamb,” Jessica says. “Or a creamy rock oyster.”

“I know I just served you veal.” I bow my head in acknowledgment. “I haven’t been able to work up enough of a guilty conscience to forgo meat. Because I do believe that will be the turning point. When our collective conscience finally tips over the edge and we start feeling truly ashamed for eating animals.”

“I think your vegetarian prediction is a bit off. We’ll need at least another two to three generations to weed out the fastidious meat lovers.” Jessica shrugs. “But what does it matter anyway? We won’t be here anymore.”

“Oh yes, I forgot to say. That’s if we don’t destroy our planet first, of course. Although I do believe we’re intelligent enough to find a solution. Maybe just in time. But I don’t think the human race is about to become extinct just yet.”

“To a beautiful mixed-race future then.” She reaches for her glass of wine. “I really can’t say anything about monogamy, but I don’t mind indulging your view of the future.”

“What’s your relationship history?”

“Sketchy to say the least.” Jessica seems to find her assessment of her love life hilarious. “I’m sorry. I’ve just had… really shitty luck with women. There was someone I loved but when things got hard, she was the first to bail, so…” She makes a throwaway gesture with her hand. “Good riddance.”

“That must have hurt.”

“It showed me her true character, which in turn made me wiser.” She grins. “I’ve also been learning to see the brighter side of things.”

“How’s that going for you?”

“Wonderfully well this evening.” Jessica rests her gaze on me. She makes for a fantastic drinking buddy. “I’m so glad I got to meet you.” Her eyes are still on mine.

I hold her gaze. I want to see what she’s made of. She has shared some of her secrets and, most importantly, I like her. I want to test the waters for whenever Jo and I ever have time for a threesome again.

“So am I, despite you shamelessly hitting on me.” I throw in a smile.

“I’d like to think we’re past that now.”

I sink my teeth into my lip and nod. “Jo and I had a further chat about it.”

Her glance flits away for a moment. “You did?”

“Yes.” I slant my head. “Jo finds you very attractive.
